Ten years ago, I picked up mahjong as a “little hobby.” Fast forward through raising three kids, countless volunteer hours, and playing 2–3 times a week (for sanity 😅), and somehow the tiles took over my life—in the best way. What started around kitchen tables turned into teaching at the MBJCC, becoming an ambassador for The Mahjong Line, and turning a passion into a full-time job. I came for the game, stayed for the people, and now I get to connect friends—old and new—one tile at a time.

Debbie Barnett has been playing Mah Jongg for over 40 years and began teaching in 2006. Since then, she has taught thousands of students, helping them develop a deep understanding and love for the game. She is the author of Unlocking the Secrets of American Mah Jongg, originally published in 2019, with the latest edition offering a timeless approach that allows students to learn and improve their skills regardless of the current year's National Mah Jongg League card. Debbie is passionate about ensuring that every student learns to play according to National Mah Jongg League rules. She shares her expertise through teaching, running events, tournaments, and mentoring players to reach the next level. She is the creator of MahjCon, an annual conference that brings Mah Jongg enthusiasts together while raising funds for Alzheimer’s research, a cause close to her heart. In 2020, she founded The School of American Mah Jongg, the only online Mah Jongg school in the U.S. and possibly the world, offering expert-led courses for players of all levels. She also developed Mahjpedia, a comprehensive searchable database designed to provide clear and concise Mah Jongg rules, strategies, and insights. Through her dedication to education, community, and charitable efforts, Debbie continues to inspire players, helping them grow in confidence, skill, and love for the game.
